Jill Oliver

Jill Oliver holds a BA (Hons) in philosophy from Trent University, and an MA in philosophy from the University of Waterloo. She is currently a PhD candidate in philosophy at the University of Waterloo, where she has completed qualifying areas in philosophy of science, ethics, and feminist philosophy, as well as a course-based area. Jill's doctoral dissertation focuses on the concept of biological sex, and her supervisor is Dr. Paul Thagard.
Jill has completed an internship at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care (under the supervision of Dr. Marcia Sokolowski), and is currently doing an internship at William Osler Health System (under the supervision of Dr. Paula Chidwick). Jill also participates in certain activities at Homewood Health Centre's Regional Centre for Excellence in Ethics, under the supervision of its Director, Steve Abdool. Since early 2010 Jill has been a member of the Clinical Ethics Committee at Headwaters Health Centre, as well as a member of the Sexuality Subcommittee of the Clinical Ethics Committee at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care. In early 2011, Jill completed a short-term consultation project on ethics, end of life hospital transfers, and the Central LHIN's Nurse-Led Outreach Teams, which are operated by the Regional Geriatric Program of Toronto.
In addition to end of life issues, Jill's research interests include such things as concepts of normality and abnormality (specifically related to intersexuality, transgender, and transexuality), reproductive ethics, and neonatal ethics. Jill is also interested in patient rights, privacy, and autonomy.
